Thus so many left-handers in art! Well, and I on the way to visit Wolfgang Widmosers studio in the outskirts of Ubud on Bali, meaning a bumpy road to find the huge house he needs to paint his large frames. Indeed, i am greeted by bigger than live faces staring at me.

Wolfgang Widmoser is painting for years now the images of men and woman from Papua with a sometimes painful intensity. Hereby he is not interested in folkloristic rarities nor in psychologic analysis. He works like the anthropologist to trace mankinds heritage.

These faces are looking trough milleniums.Their images are fixed and the time is the passing element. It is not the individual that interests the artist, it's the structure of humanity, the human as species. Time gets frozen. The eyes we look into are those of our own family of man.

Everything we perceive, he writes, transmits a specific energy that enhances our awareness. The timeless quality of beauty curls like a shell around our awareness.

He names his portraits after figures of Greek mythology and fiction, like Kreios, Koios, Acteon and Morpheus, Hebe and Hecate, thus connecting the Mediterranean civilisation to the outlying societies of the Pacific. Even when the eyes of these mythological figure are often those of his own beloved young wife.

And - Hockney's iconoclastic views mentioned - Wolfgang reveals one of his own secrets of art: he uses all kinds of mirrors-convex or concave - to alienate the image of his model stuff.
