Mirrors of life

We remember those mirrors from days of childhood, when street artists came into town and set up horror cabinets with bottled foetuses and mirrors that made you fat or bulimic.

Outside the tent you could hear people's laughter which came came from a crackling shellac disk. Wolfgang used mirrors to disfigure idyllic nature mortes into reality: apples , sea shells, Martini glasses - painted in a masterly old fashioned mannerism.

Again it is the element of time that get frozen. The Dutch baroque masters in their stillifes did it first: they painted apples rotting and decaying hare and thus signalled a memento mori and mortui to us who longed only for sinful pleasure.

Salvador Dali consequently painted his famous twisted timepiece, less interested than the Dutch in Protestant morals but more in the inviolability of a fate that is not determined by the individual but physic - the time machine of history.
